Mayor Franklin held a news conference July 16, 2008 to indicate the most recent job layoff’s and budget cuts. Although she did not recommend the 2.5% cuts, she added, her advice from the former CFO Janice Davis recommended reduction of more than the 14.6 million needed. The cuts will be 21.6 million from the General Fund to help expected short falls in Revenue during FY09 per Mayor Franklin.
Mayor Franklin will remove 190 positions, every department funded by the general fund will be impacted she said, however Watershed, Solid Waste, and Aviation funds will not be apart of the cuts as well Park Improvements, due to having their own funding the Mayor announced. The bottom line is 165 positions will be cut- 72 filled position and 93 vacant positions.
These are the projected layoffs and non-personnel budget reduction.
Ø Mayor’s office will cut 10 executive positions, some filled and vacant.
Ø Police Department cuts will be 5.2 mil, some current positions and 4 vacant
Ø Fire Rescue cuts will be 4.2 mil with losses of 34 sworn positions
Ø Closing of Fire station 7, and removal of the entire Special Operations squad
Ø Community Planning Dept, 1.5 mil, cutting vacant and non personnel positions
Ø Solicitor’s office will lose 20 positions
Ø Public Defenders office will lose 13 positions
Ø Dept of Corrections will have 3 filled positions cut and 3 vacant positions
Ø Internal Auditors and Ethic’s department will have budget cuts
Ø Parks and Cultural affairs cuts include vacant and non personnel positions
Ø Finance budget cuts of $339 thousand, and 1 vacant position 1 filled position
Ø Human Resource budget cuts $228 thousand with non personnel reductions
Ø Procurement budget cuts $107 thousand, 1 filled position and non personnel
Ø Information Technology budget cuts 1.2 mil, with filled position, 3 vacant, and non personnel cuts
Ø Georgia Power contract will be eliminated, along with the Federal Lobbing contract.
Ø Non Department funding of Atlanta Development Authority budget cuts $620 thousand.
